About the Role

We are recruiting compassionate, proactive Support Workers to join our Mental Health Floating Support service across Durham, Bishop Auckland and East Durham on a Temporary-to-Permanent basis.


This TTP opportunity allows you to step into the role immediately, gain hands-on experience and—following successful performance—transition into a permanent position within the team.

You will support adults with mental health needs to live safely, independently and confidently in their own homes and communities, helping them to:

  • Build daily living skills and emotional resilience
  • Maintain their tenancy and personal safety
  • Develop social connections and community participation
  • Work towards recovery and improved wellbeing


Key Responsibilities

Person-Centred Support

  • Build warm, trusting relationships and provide emotional and practical support.
  • Promote wellbeing, self-esteem, safety and independence.
  • Support with daily living tasks, personal care (when required), budgeting and maintaining a safe home.
  • Encourage involvement in social, leisure, education and work opportunities.
  • Support people to understand their tenancy rights and responsibilities.
  • Use positive strategies to support individuals who may present challenging behaviours.

Health, Safety & Wellbeing

  • Promote healthy lifestyles, attending health appointments and wellbeing checks.
  • Administer/monitor medication following policy and training.
  • Identify and report changes in mental or physical health.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents and safeguarding concerns.

Professional Practice

  • Maintain accurate records, case notes and financial documentation.
  • Contribute to support planning and review meetings.
  • Work independently in clients’ homes and in the community.
  • Liaise professionally with families, carers and external agencies.
  • Follow all policies on confidentiality, health & safety, equality and infection control.

Essential Skills & Qualities

  • Warm, person-centred approach and ability to build trusting relationships.
  • Understanding of mental health needs and recovery-focused support.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Calm, patient and non-judgmental approach when supporting people in distress.
  • Ability to support with physical tasks (e.g., pushing wheelchairs).
  • Flexible and willing to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Clean driving licence and access to a car—required for home visits across the area.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting people with mental health needs.
  • A Health & Social Care qualification (NVQ/Diploma).
