About the Role

We are seeking a confident and compassionate Senior Support Worker to join our Learning Disability Service in Newbury on a Temporary-to-Permanent basis.

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, person-centred support to adults with learning disabilities living in their own homes, while also providing leadership, guidance and supervision to support staff.

Your work will help individuals:

  • Build independence and daily living skills
  • Improve emotional wellbeing and confidence
  • Access social, leisure, work and educational opportunities
  • Maintain safety, dignity, choice and control in their lives


Key Responsibilities

Person-Centred & Practical Support

  • Build trusting, supportive relationships with service users.
  • Promote independence, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing.
  • Support with daily living skills, personal care, healthy routines and community involvement.
  • Assist with mobility needs including wheelchairs, hoists and specialist equipment.
  • Encourage participation in meaningful activities and new experiences.
  • Administer and monitor medication safely.

Positive Behaviour & Safety

  • Use appropriate strategies to support individuals who may express needs through challenging behaviour.
  • Follow health & safety guidance, safeguarding duties and risk management plans.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and changes in wellbeing.

Senior-Level Responsibilities

  • Provide support, supervision and informal coaching to junior staff.
  • Lead by example as a positive professional role model.
  • Help coordinate rotas, delegate tasks and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports and administrative duties.
  • Liaise with colleagues, families and external agencies to ensure consistent, high-quality support.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience supporting people with learning disabilities.
  • Ability to supervise and support junior staff.
  • Strong communication skills (written & verbal).
  • Ability to work independently and safely in service users' homes.
  • Calm, patient and resilient when supporting individuals who may become distressed or present challenging behaviour.
  • Ability to support personal care and physical needs, including hoists and wheelchairs.
  • NVQ Level 2/3 or relevant social care qualification.
  • Ability to work flexibly: evenings, weekends, sleep-ins and bank holidays.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting autistic people.
  • Driving licence and access to a car.
